Contact Lenses

Contact lenses are a speciality of the practice especially those for sensitive eyes or complex prescriptions. We are of course always happy to see the less complex cases as well!

Generally contact lenses are available in Rigid Gas Permeable or soft lens form but we can also fit hybrid, piggy back and scleral lenses.

Hybrid Lenses

These are lenses with a rigid gas permeable centre and a soft skirt combining the attributes of both rigid and soft lenses. They are very useful for distorted corneas.

Scleral lenses are the oldest form of contact lenses but they are now available in both gas permeable and PMMA materials, either pre-formed or taken from an impression of the eye. These are larger lenses that fit under the eyelids and completely cover the front of the eye.

Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) lenses are made from firm gas-permeable plastic, range from 9.00 to 14.00mm in diameter, and rest on a thin film of tears on the cornea. They are easy to handle, easy to look after, and still represent one of the most cost-effective methods of wearing lenses. They do require a short adaption period and do not lend themselves very well to occasional use. However they are available in a very wide range of materials, parameters and designs and are sometimes the best way of achieving the highest standard of vision.

Soft Lenses are larger, about 14mm in diameter, and sit over the cornea onto the white of the eye. These require little adaption, can be worn occasionally, and are indicated for sports and other active occupations. Most of the soft lenses supplied today are disposable or on a planned replacement scheme.

Acuvue Trueye - the world's first daily disposable silicon hydrogel contact lensDaily Disposables are worn one day and then thrown away. Great for every day use or special occasions. As the lenses are thrown away after each single use they require no cleaning or solutions and are considered the safest soft lens type available.

We now also stock Acuvue TruEye-- the worlds first daily disposable silicone hydrogel lens for even more comfort and visual clarity

Weekly Wear Lenses are worn continuously for one week then thrown away. Many consider this to be the most convenient option as there are no solutions to use, and the lenses are handled just once a week.

Daily Wear Lenses are worn every day and removed, cleaned and stored overnight in contact lens solution. They are discarded either once or twice a month. This option is one of the most cost-effective ways of wearing soft contact lenses.

Continuous Wear Lenses are worn continuously night and day for one month and then discarded.
